Marine Litter - Europe’s Answers to a Global Challenge

September 6 2016

Annually, more than 100,000 marine mammals and 1 million birds die due to plastic pollution. Yet unfortunately, each year millions and millions of tons of plastic continue to leak into our oceans, with estimates predicting that if business were to continue as usual, there will be more plastics than fish in our oceans by 2050. With the Commission's Circular Economy Package, proposals to review the Waste Directives and joint interests by different sectors to prevent waste happening in the first place a new promising plastics strategy might be on the rise -  where the inclusion of preventing marine litter is an integral part. Waste Free Oceans shared the panel with Commission representatives and other NGO representatives, providing practical answers in the form of fishermen trawls removing waste efficiently and locally.
