In February 2025, our river trap barrier in the Feza River, Tanzania, captured 94 kilograms of waste. While it's encouraging to see that 49.2% of the PET bottles and 38.1% of the glass bottles collected are recyclable, it's important to remember: this waste should have never been there in the first place.
Every piece of plastic and glass that ends up in our rivers damages marine ecosystems, threatens local communities, and signals a deeper issue — the urgent need for better waste management systems.
At Waste Free Oceans, we see these numbers not just as statistics, but as opportunities. Opportunities to build a stronger circular economy, where valuable resources are reused and kept out of our waterways. Opportunities to protect both marine life and human well-being.
Our work in Tanzania shows that with the right tools and collective effort, change is possible. But we must act faster, and smarter.
Every bottle recycled, every piece of waste collected, every awareness campaign launched — they all bring us one step closer to a cleaner, healthier planet.
Let's turn waste into value. Let's make waste-free oceans a reality.
